An investigation on the handling of hospital solid wastes in Ardebi during 2006-2007

Hospital solid wastes (HSWs) include different kinds of wastes and have been needed to be managed correctly through each step of processing in order to prevent their hazardous effects towards biologic environment. There have been remarkable developments in methods and techniques used in hospitals, but those employed for the handling and disposal of HSWs have been slow to improve since 1850th , and nowadays it has been one of the most challenging problems of waste management throughout the world. The purpose of this study is to investigate the handling of HSWs and to reach some perspectives of its optimization in Ardebil city. Data was gathered by bibliography, observation, interviews and filling out special questionnaires for determination the amount of different kinds of solid wastes produced, segregated, collected, stored, transported and disposed off in the governmental hospitals in Ardebil from march 2006 to march 2007. Then, the data were analyzed using SPSS program. The results of this study showed that the average amount of waste production per day was 2.5 Kg per bed, of which 70% were domestic wastes and the rest included infectious, medical and other kinds of wastes. In addition, it was observed that about 60% of hospitals were equipped with incinerators and in 80% of hospitals all the wastes have been collected three times daily and land filled truly, but without qualified separation, which can be very hazardous for the environmental health of this city.
