The prevalence of familial multiple sclerosis (FMS) in Ardabil province, Ardabil, Iran

English Abstract

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common demyelinating diseases of the central nerves system that occurs frequently in families. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of familial multiple sclerosis in Ardabil province, Ardabil, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 611 patients who registered in Ardabil MS registry system in Alavi hospital. The necessary data such as demographic data and having a relative with MS, degree of relatives, residence place, number of hospitalization, signs and symptoms of disease collected by a checklist and then analyzed by statistical methods in SPSS version 19. The p<0.05 was considered as significant. Results: Of all patients, 440 (72%) were female and rest of them were male with ratio 2.57. Of all patients, 75.5% were married, 66.8% were from Ardabil city, 30.8% employee and 35.4% had education in level Diploma and low. The most symptoms in patients were sensory impairment with 14.2%. In this study 85 (14%) of MS patients had familial history of MS in their family that of them in 38.8% was in first degree relative. Conclusion: Results showed that the FMS in Ardabil was lower than other provinces in country Iran.
