English Abstract

Background & Objective: Lumbar spinal stenosis is the common cause of low back pain. MRI is the best modality for diagnosis of spinal canal stenosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate lumbar spinal canal diameters and relationship with gender, age, stature, weight and job. Materials & Methods: 100 men and 100 women with range of 25 to 40 years old of East Azarbayjan who were referred to Sheikholrais MRI Center are selected. The diameters of spinal canal are measured on midsagittal and axial section on T2 weighted images by 0.3 T MRI Unite. The results of measurements were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: The results showed that the least anteroposterior diameter is at the 3rd lumbar vertebra but the narrowest transverse diameter is at the 1st lumbar vertebra. The mean anteroposterior diameter of lumbar spinal canal decrease from 1st to 3rd lumbar vertebra, followed by an increase from 3rd to 5th. From 1st to 5th lumbar vertebra, there is an increasing of the mean transverse diameters. The mean transverse diameter in middle part of vertebra is longer than lower part. Frank relation is seen between gender and physical workers with lumbar spinal canal stenosis, although there was no relation between age, stature, and weight with lumbar spinal canal stenosis. Conclusion: Considering high incidence of lumbar canal stenosis and relationship to heavy manual works, it is recommended that a plain radiography is taken before choosing heavy manual works and exercises. People who their canal is relatively narrow should be refused from having heavy manual works and exercises.
