Meconium Peritonitis and Huge Pseudocyst Formation: A Case Report
خلاصه انگلیسی
Meconium peritonitis is a sterile chemical peritonitis caused by bowel perforation with intraperitoneal extravasation of the meconium in uterine. When the inflamed intestinal loops become fixed, meconium peritonitis leads to a cystic cavity with a fibrous wall, and the result is termed pseudocyst. case presentation: a one-day-old preterm newborn, birth weight 2380 gr, gestational age 35 weeks presenting abdominal distention, abdominal wall erythema, septic situation and high body temperature. Ultrasound showed a septated cystic echogenic intra abdominal mass. A plain abdominal X-ray showed calcification in cyst septum. Therefore, an emergency laparotomy was performed and showed intrauterine bowel perforation has happened. Conclusion: Among the previously reported cases of Meconium peritonitis, pseudocyst formation is rare and can be fatal. Patients often present with nonspecific physical findings such as distension and emesis. Abdominal X-ray films are invaluable for identifying the calcification seen with a meconium pseudocyst, and large eggshell calcifications are pathognomonic for the pseudocyst.
