Anticonvulsant activity of Iranian medicinal plants and molecular docking studies of isolated phytochemicals

Epilepsy is one of the common brain disorders, estimated to have a prevalence of about 1%. Several neurological side effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) include cognitive impairment, depression, and hepatotoxicity. The Iranian flora is a rich source of medicinal plants. Several in vivo studies have examined the anticonvulsant activity of Iranian medicinal plants (IMPs) in. These plants belong to 20 families and 37 genera. The objective of this review was to study and incorporate pharmacological and phytochemical investigations with computational medicinal chemistry approaches such as molecular docking with the Lipinski rule for evaluating IMPs with anticonvulsant activity. The literature review revealed that Apiaceae was the most abundant family in the antiepileptic application. The combination of experimental data, molecular docking, and physicochemical properties of isolated compounds from Otostegia persica (Burm.f.) Boiss., Zhumeria majdae Rech.f. & Wendelbo, Pulicaria gnaphalodes (Vent.) Boiss., Glaucium vitellinum Boiss. & Buhse, and Salvia sahendica Boiss. & Buhse projected anticonvulsant activity. Among the examined natural entities, compounds 2 (Morin) and 14 (Linarin) could be assumed to be candidates for biological activity testing and targeted fractionation on targeted receptors. In conclusion, this survey suggests a direction and guidelines for prospects of potent antiepileptic lead compounds.
