Game changing trends in the development of digital health tools from physician-centered to patient-centered care

Probably the most important technology trend in digital health is the rapid and unprecedented expansion of smartphones.one in four people now owns a smartphone in worldwide. This widespread access to personal computing power is the foundation of digital healthcare. Healthcare data from sources such as electronic health records, genetic data and general health, and research and behavioral information are accumulating at an unprecedented rate. This volume of information can only be managed with the help of technology. Patient-centered applications are defined as systems that enable a partnership among practitioners, patients, and their families to ensure that procedures and decisions respect patients’ needs and preferences. Mobile applications and websites that provide remote consultation and care address the challenges of cost, accessibility, and convenience. These artificial intelligence based tools are solutions designed to personalize healthcare or reduce the need for human interactions. In developed countries, about 80% of medical expenses are spent on chronic diseases. Digital health solutions that improve the efficiency of care and treatment for patients with chronic diseases have the potential to eliminate some of this challenges. Websites that connect people to medical personnel, businesses and colleagues, facilitate the patient journey and enable access to information and support. Ongoing advances in smartphone technology and health care apps and devices should expand their utility for enhancing patient-centered care in the future. Background and aims: To evaluate the impact of digital health tools from physician-centered to patient-centered care Method: A single case study design was used. The qualitative data consisted of semi-structured interviews and library searches, covering the time period 2017–2021. The data were analyzed using conventional content analysis, complemented with document analyses. Results: Artificial intelligence can play a key role in helping doctors to take advantage of all available information and insights when searching for a diagnosis or treatment of a disease. Applications that use artificial intelligence can provide reliable information to "health-conscious people". These applications lighten the responsibility of general practitioners and hospital accident and emergency departments by enabling the examination of minor ailments.
