Demographical and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients in fourth surge of pandemic in northwest of Iran

خلاصه انگلیسی

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which is a highly infectious disease, has been known as a pandemic involving many countries such as Iran. Since fall of 2020 that scientists in United kingdom identified a new variant of SARS-CoV2 which is named B.1.1.7, another surge of COVID-19 has started. Due to the lack of information, this present research aimed to identify the effective clinical and demographic hallmarks of COVID-19 patients in fourth surge in Ardabil Province. Method and materials: We carried out a population-based analytical cross-sectional study using clinical and demographical characteristics of COVID-19 from February 2021 till May 2021 among SARS-CoV-2 infected patients confirmed with RT-PCR test who are admitted to the Imam Khomeini hospital in Ardabil. The clinical and demographical features along with comorbidities were collected by means of questionnaires designed by researcher and analyzed by SPSS v24. This study evaluated several variables including age, sex, comorbidities in the intensive care unit (ICU), and non-ICU admitted COVID-19 patients. Besides, an evaluation was conducted for a better understanding of the relation between COVID-19 mortality and effective agents. Results: We evaluated 500 patients who were infected by B.1.1.7 variant, with 54.4% males, and 45.5% females, most of the patients were above 60 years old. Out of all the patients, 35.1% of patients had hypertension as the main comorbidity followed by diabetes (21.4%), cardiovascular disease (8.4 %), renal diseases (2.4%), and etc. In the present study, the findings showed that the patients' hospitalization in ICU with comorbidity was higher than patients without underlying disease. Interestingly, older patients were more likely to be admitted to the ICU and had less chance to recover than other age groups. Conclusion: This investigation demonstrated that high age and comorbidities are two major risk factors for reducing the probability of recovery and increasing admission to the ICU in patients infected by U.K variant which is the same statics for the variant that started this pandemic in the first place. Therefore, elderly individuals gwith at least one comorbidity are more at risk as they become infected with SARS-CoV-2 variants.
