A seroepidemiological study of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women in Ardabil, Iran, using ECLIA technique

Toxoplasmosis is• a wildspread zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular pararite.lt is estimated that one third ofpopulation hay been infected by T.gondii throughout the world. Toxoplasmosis acquired in the first trimester ojpregnancy commonly leads to stillbirth or severe fetal malformations and symptoms such as retinochoroiditis, hydrocephalus or microcephalus, and cerebral calcification (congenital Toxoplasmosis)•In this descriptive shtdV. using Taeetro Chemi Luminescense Immuno Assay (ECLIA, EJecsys• 2010 Analyzer), 544 serum samples of pregnant women were detected in Farahi Laboratory (Ardabil, Iran) for determining the levels of Anti-Toxo JgG & IgM(in 2009).From 544 studied specimens, in 256 cases (47%) the concentrations of Toxo-IgG were, higher than 30 IU/ml, which are considered positive for IgG antibodies. In other 287 cases (52.5%) the concentrations of Toxo-IgG were between l /U/ml and <30 IG%ml, which are considered indeterminate, and only in 25 cases of all 544 studied samples (4.6%) the levels of Tuxo-TgM were higher than I Cal (?I COI), which ore considered positive for Ig.1'1 antibodies•!t is concluded that in 47% of studied pregnant women in Ardabil (a city in the northwest of Iran) the immunity has been increased against Toxoplasnra gondii• which should be considered due to previous Toxoplasnra infec•liun• And 52.8% qfpregnant women did not have immunity against T. gondii, hence they were susceptible to the infection.
