Prevalence of dicrocoeliasis in slaughtered animals & its hitopathological lesion in liver, in Ardebil, Iran

English Abstract

Dicrocoeliasis is a widespred disease of ruminants caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum.This trematodes live in the bile ducts of domestic and wild ruminants, it occasionally affects rabbits, pigs, dogs, horses and humans.This study was carried out to achieve two purposes.:1-To determine the prevalence of Dicrocoeliasis in cattle and sheep in Ardebil.(a province in the northwest of Iran)For this purpose the slaughterhouse of Ardebil visited between March25, 2006 and March 5,2007 and a total of 39998 sheep and 5410 cattle livers were examined. The prevalence rates of dicrocoeliasis were 3.07%(2.90%<p>3.24)in sheeps and 8.08%in cattle. 2-To determine the pathological lesion provoked by dicrocoeliasis in hepatic tissue.. All of the 15 bovine and 25 sheep liver taken from the slaughtershouse of Ardebil, infected by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, and autopsied for the infection, demonstrated hepatic lesions. The specimens were taken from grossly visible patholoic regions.The pathologic cahnges were classified in 3 groups based on the major pathologic changes: Group 1, shows mainly thriaditis, focal necrosis , cholangiectasia of septal bile ducts. Group2, shows mostly bile duct proliferation with focal fibrosis. Group3, shows architecturla liver disturbances with bridging fibrosis and calcification.
