The comparative echocardiographic study of left ventricle ejection fraction and left atrium diameter in patients with transient and permanent atrial fibrillation.

English Abstract

Introduction : Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrythmias in humankind. As shown, 5.5 million people are afflicted with this arrythmia in the world and 2.2% of Americans have AF. Some of the patients experience transient paroxysms of atrial fibrillation; Namely 6% of men and 3% of women over 65 years old, regarding to statistical information. The purpose of this study was to compare left ventricle ejection fraction and left atrium size between patients with transient and permanent atrial fibrillation by echocardiography. Methods : The method of the study was descriptive-analytic. In a period of 4 months, 61 patients with AF rhythm, admitted in the CCU of Ardabil Bouali Hospital , were studied clinically, and evaluated byelectrocardiography and echocardiography and the gathered informations were analyzed by the statistical methods. Results: From 61 studied patients, 27 cases (44.3%) were male and 34 (55.7%) were female. The average age of all patients was 62.1 years. From the studied group, 11 persons (18%) were afflicted by transient AF and 50 persons (82%) had permanent AF. In echocardiographic studies, the mean LV ejection fraction in patients with transient AF was 44.1% and in patients with permanent AF was 40.07%. The most important finding was that in 60.5% of patients with permanent AF the mean left atrium diameter was more than 4.5 cm but only 25% of patients with transient AF hadleft atrium diameter more than 4.5 cm. Conclusion: Paying attention to the latter information, although there was no significant distinction in the LV ejection fraction of the patients with transient and permanent AF, but there was meaningful difference between the Left atrium diameter of patients with transient and permanent AF groups.
