E-learning Medical Microbiology, a Successful Experience at Birjand University of Medical Sciences

English Abstract

Background & Objectives: Nowadays the use of multimedia technology in the field of web-based learning has been a tremendous expansion. Medical microbiology is an academic course which due to the nature of its content has the potential to be delivered on a multimedia style. The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of delivering this course on a base of electronic learning methods. Methods: First, a lesson plan was written. Then, written scenarios were prepared. In the next stage relevant e-learning content were provided. Web-based contents were uploaded on the BUMS educational portal and m-learning contents installed on students mobile phones. It was asked students to study the contents both from the portal and their mobile phones. Also during the semester, students were asked to upload their seminar contents through e-learning portal presenting it to other students of the class. Their midterm exam was hold online to can use multimedia aspects. Finally, the student attitudes toward e-learning in microbiology was obtained using online questionnaires. Results: The learners significantly preferred e-learning/m-learning as a superior methods of teaching medical microbiology.
