Early maladaptive schemas of mothers of mentally retarded children and their correlations with co morbid psychiatric disorders in children in Ardabil in 1392

English Abstract

Introduction: Early maladaptive schemas in mothers who have a mentally retarded child can affect and damage interaction between mother – child. Identifying, modification and changing these maladaptive schemas can have a major role in the treatment and rehabilitation of mentally retarded children. This study was conducted to determine the early maladaptive schemas in mothers of MR children, and their correlations with co -morbid psychiatric disorders in these children. Methods: By convenience sampling, 32 mothers of children with mild and moderate mental retardation participated in the study (Mothers X ̅ age = 38 children X ̅ age= 11). Young Schema Questionnaire was used to evaluate the mother's schemas and the K-SADS questionnaire was used to identify children psychiatric co morbidities. The data were analyzed by T test, U Mann-Whitney, Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests. Results: Results showed a significant relationship between rates of emotional deprivation and failure schemas in mothers with IQ level in children. There was also a significant relationship between mothers emotional inhibition Schema with gender of children. Correlation of Defect /shame with conduct disorder (r=0.001) and with major depression( r= 0.009) , self -sacrifice, failure and subjugation with major depression (Respectively r=0.002 , r=0.003 r=0.003 )and abandonment with ADHD ( r= 0.005) enmeshment/ undevelopement with separation anxiety(r=0.04) were significant. Conclusions: Mothers of children with mental retardation have maladaptive Schemas witch some of these schemes have significant correlation With Comorbidities psychiatric disorders in these children.
