The public awareness of multiple sclerosis in the city of Ardabil

English Abstract

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of myelin in the central nervous system and motor disturbances in the patient, which may result in recurrent episodes of exacerbation of symptoms. Especially in our country growing prevalence of MS in recent years will double matters to attention to it. According to importance complications caused by MS In order to create a context for proper awareness among the population and to reduce the suffering of patients and their families and enhance the quality of life of people with MS, we decided to accomplish this study. Methods: This article is a descriptive cross sectional study. The statistical Society was Ardabil city's population and the sample consisted of 150 subjects among the people of the city and residents of some neighborhoods in the city of Ardabil were randomly selected. Data collected by questionnaire and analyze of data using descriptive statistics in the form of tables, graphs, averages, standard deviations by SPSS software were determined. Results: The minimum and the maximum ages of the participants were 20 and 63 years respectively. The subjects had a mean age of 32.34, SD = 9.80 and the variance were 96.07. Most are 32 years of age. 36% of the subjects had a bachelor's degree. 88.66% of people had heard something about MS. Most informing about MS at a rate of 46.26 percent was done by TV and radio and notification by magazines and newspapers were lowest at a rate of 12.68 percent. 33% of participants knew that MS can lead to a disability. 88% of participants knew that MS is a non-contagious disease. MS considered as a contributing factor of the decline Individual abilities by the 86 percent of subjects. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the media had the greatest role in informing the public and little informing has been made by newspapers and magazines. Most of participants conceived that locomotor weakness was the most common symptom at the MS patients while fatigue was. So media should continue vigorously to servicing in this area. But magazines and newspapers have to look more than before.
