Title
Tricyclic Antidepressants
English Abstract
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), one of the most common causes of death from poisoning, are used to treat major depression and other medical disorders. They have a lipophilic structure and high potential for bioconcentration. TCAs are rapidly absorbed after ingestion and have a large volume of distribution, which can delay their elimination for up to 10 days. They act as a reuptake inhibitor of catecholamines, including serotonin and norepinephrine, but they have also anticholinergic, antihistaminic, alpha blockade, and quinidine-like effects. Cardiotoxicity is the main adverse effect of TCAs on overdose, and sodium bicarbonate is used to treat intoxication.
