Title

Teeth derived stem cells: types and characteristic

English Abstract

Background and Aim : Tissue engineering is a brand new field of science that focuses on creating appropriate conditions for the regeneration of tissues. Three interactive parts including scaffolds, signaling molecules and cells play mains role in the ground. Stem cells (SCs) are unique choice to resurrect damaged tissues given the fact that they are characterized by the revitalization ability through mitotic cell division and differentiation to wide range of specialized cell types. Methods : We have reviewed related articles from PubMed and Scopus websites from 2010 up to 2015. Results : Diverse stem cell sources in the adult human body provide new horizons to both allogeneic and autologous cell therapies. Although they present some common markers such as cluster of differentiation (CD) 105, CD146 and STRO-1; SCs derived from various tissues have different patterns in relation to proliferation, clonogenicity, and differentiation abilities in vitro and in vivo conditions. Teeth derived stem cells which is usually accessible with minimum ethical concerns hold promise not only in dental repair and regeneration but also in a range of therapeutic applications. These postnatal populations have mesenchymal-stem-cell-like (MSC) qualities, including the capacity for self-renewal and multilineage differentiation potential. Up to now, six type of human dental stem/progenitor cells have been isolated and characterized: dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP), periodontal ligament of deciduous teeth SCs (DePDL) and dental follicle progenitor cells (DFPCs). The best method to select appropriate TDSCs for regeneration approaches has yet to be established. Correct evaluation of these cells is important in order to determine their potential use in clinical fields. Conclusion : This article will review the isolation and characterization of the properties of different dental MSC-like populations. Important issues in stem cell biology, such as stem cell niche, homing, and immunoregulation, will also be discussed.
