Title
Case-control study of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and maternal smoking
English Abstract
Introduction: The studies on the detrimental effects of smoking on pregnancy are indeed extensive. Exposure to tobacco smoke in utero is suspected to be associated with ADHD symptoms in children that may be related to prolonged hypoxic status in utero. METHOD: A retrospective, case-control study was conducted with 98 ADHD cases and 112 non-ADHD controls of both genders. The case and control children and their parents were systematically assessed with structured diagnostic interviews. RESULTS: ADHD cases were 1.9 times (95% confidence interval = 1.1-4.1; p = .02) more likely to have been exposed to cigarettes in utero than were the non-ADHD control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Results showed that maternal smoking can be associated with ADHD in children.
