English Abstract

Introduction: unwanted pregnancy is one of the most important problems among women in the developing countries in spite of using contraceptives. Depotmedroxyprogestrone acetate (DMPA) inject able (DMPA) and Intrauterine Device (IUD) are two suitable and safe contraceptives during postpartum and lactation period. So we studied and compared the rate of repeat pregnancies with the continuous use of these methods during 24 months after delivery. Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytic one that was conducted on all of the women who had childbirth from the beginning of April 2003 until the end of March 2003 and used one of the above mentioned methods during the 90 days after delivery. (278 subjects) Results: The most of subjects were 27-36 years old, illiterate, unemployed and had 1-2 children. %79 used DMPA and rest of them IUD. No pregnancy occurred during this period by using these two methods. The usage of DMPA continued for 1-8 months in %70.3 of them and IUD was used for 18-24 months in %70.7. Conclusion: Results showed that DMP and IUD were highly effective and suitable methods in lactation period and IUD had longer usage period than DMPA
