Relationship between Resiliency and Locus of Control among the Addicts under Treatment in Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) Centers

English Abstract

Background and Aim: One of the aspects that distinguish people from each other is the degree of control that they think they have on the events of their life. The degree of person’s belief in controlling events in life is a factor that would distinguish them from one another. people who believed that they can determine their own destiny (internal locus of control) compared with those who believed that luck, destiny, fate or other important and powerful people have their life control (external locus of control) behaved differently in many situations. The successful coping with stress and difficult situations, is called resilience. This study aimed to determine the relationship between locus of control with the resilience of the people treated with drug abuse in Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) centers. Methods: In this descriptive and analytical study, a total of 61 subjects who were treated in MMT centers in Ardabil province and had willingness to participate in the study were enrolled. For data collection the standard scale of Rotter control and the Connor - Davidson (CD- RIS) standard scale resiliency tools were used. Validity and reliability of tools were conducted in several studies. To analysis of findings, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient was used in SPSS18 software. Results: The locus of control in 14/3% subjects was below nine, that indicates they have internal locus of control, and 85/7% of them earned scores higher than 9, that indicates the external locus of control in these subjects. Average score in scale of resiliency was 37/3 from five which reflects the relatively good resilience of the subjects. The Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between resiliency and subjects locus of control (p =0/765). Therefore, results indicate that the more internal location of control in people, the higher their resilience will be. Conclusion: According to the existence of external locus of control in most addicted people, education psychotherapy techniques can help increasing their resiliency, so that externalization locus of control in addict people under treatment can take responsibility for them in problem solvings and promote their motivation for withdrawal.
