Title
Efficacy of Social Problem Solving Training on Attitude of Students at Risk of Addiction
English Abstract
Background and Aim: Addiction is a chronic and recurrent disease that happens and maintains by the interaction of various factors such as:, genetics, psychological, social and environmental factors. Attitude towards drugs is an important factor in students regarding drug abuse and addiction. By using cognitive-behavioral teaching methods and change in attitude of students at risk of addiction, we can significantly reduce the risk of recurrence. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of social problem solving approach on attitude of students at risk of addiction. Methods: This study is quasi-experimental intervention. Initially 500 freshman and sophomore high school students were selected from Schools of Meshkin Shahr and then got evaluated using the talent addiction scale. Among the student whose scores were higher than 21 in the talent addiction scale, 50 subjects were selected, and randomly divided into two groups of 25. Subsequently to gather information, the Drug Attitude Scale was used. Students in the intervention group were trained with social problem solving skills for eight sessions and each session lasted about one hour. Ultimately Drug Attitude Scale was tested again. For statistical analysis univariate ANCOVA was used in SPSS18 software. Results: The attitude towards drug in subjects in control and intervention group before the intervention had no significant difference. But in the experimental group in the pre-test and posttest mean attitude score was statistically significant (0.001>P). Therefore, social problem solving reduced positive attitude towards drugs in the intervention group than the control group and those interventions reduced positive attitude up to 26% of experimental group toward drugs compared to the control group. Conclusion: The most direct way to enhance the psycho-social ability of students is interventions that strengthen personal coping resources and their personal and social abilities and prevent them from prevalence of drug use and subsequently social damage. Therefore, it is recommended to change the attitude towards drugs among students, and teaching problem solving skills will be on the agenda of planners.
