Highly sensitive C-reactive protein: is it a predictor of airway disease severity in mustard lung patients?

Introduction: Respiratory problems are the most common late complication of Sulfur Mustard exposure. It was the first study that designed to evaluate the relationship between serum highly sensitive C-reactive protein levels (hs-CRP) as an inflammatory marker and severity of airway disease in chemically injured patients (CIPs) suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods and materials: Fifty consecutively CIPs with stable COPD and mean age 46.3±9.18 years were enrolled in this study. Also 30 healthy men were considered as control group and their age and body mass index were matched. The following parameters were evaluated: spirometry, arterial blood gasometry, 6 minute walk distance, BODE index, ST George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Serum hs-CRP levels were measured in both patient and control groups. Results: In case group, mean FEV1 was 2.14± 0.76 lit. (58.98± 17.51 %pred). Fifty-four percent of patients were in moderate stage of COPD .The mean serum hs-CRPlevel was 9.4± 6.78 mg/l in case group. There was significant differences in serum hs-CRP levels between case and control groups (p<0.001).There was significant inverse correlation between serum hs-CRPlevel and FEV1 (p=0.01).Also hs-CRP level had significant correlation with Global initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stages (r=0.45, p<0.001) Conclusion: According to this study, it is proposed that serum hs-CRP level is increased in CIPs with COPD and it have direct correlation with disease severity.
