Antioxidant effect of Humulus lupulus extract on carbon tetrachloride-included liver damage in rats

Introduction: In this study antioxidant effects of aqueous extract of Humulus lupulus was investigated using carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-damaged rat liver as the experimental model. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups (n=6). The two first groups including normal and CCl4 control groups, administered with distilled water orally for 14 days. The three later groups received 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg of Humulus lupulus extract for 14 days respectively. All of the groups except normal control group received 1 ml CCl4 (1:1 v/v dissolved in olive oil) on 14th day. All animals were sacrificed 12 h after post-treatment. The liver slices were collected and homogenized to determine the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) parameters. Results: Administration of carbon tetrachloride decreased the amount of TAC and increased the level of MDA compared to the normal control group. Pretreatment with a Humulus lupulus extract significantly increased TAC capacity and decreased the MDA level (P < 0.05). Discussion and Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the pretreatment with Humulus lupulus extract significantly ameliorates CCl4-induced liver damage in rats, which may be attributable to its potential antioxidant propensity.
