COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance Rate and Related Factors among Ardabil Population

Background: SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus emerged in December 2019 and led to COVID-19 disease pandemic. So far, millions of people have been infected and thousands have died. Despite the recent developments in COVID-19 treatment, the most effective way to control this pandemic is people's vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. The low acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine in the community is serious challenge for health authorities to eradicate this disease. The present study evaluates the acceptance rate of COVID-19 vaccines and its related factors among the population of Ardabil city in 1400. Methods and Materials: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among Ardabil city population aged 18 years and older using quota sampling. The data was collected with the researcher�made questionnaire from May 2021 to February 2022. The questionnaire contained 34 questions. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 22 software. Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test was used to evaluate the association between vaccine acceptance and demographic and non-demographic factors. This research was approved by the ethics committee of IAU.ARDABIL (IR.IAU.ARDABIL.REC.1400.075). Results: A total of 393 people filled out the questionnaire. The average age of participants was 38.39±13.18 years old and 52.2% (N=205) were female. The acceptance rate for the COVID-19 vaccine was 82.7%. Most people (67.2%, N=264) received Sinopharm vaccine. High level of education (P Value=0.007), oneself or relative history of COVID-19 infection (P Value=0.029, 0.002 respectively), death of relatives due to COVID-19 (P Value=0.022), belief in the vaccine effectiveness (P Value<0.001), assuming that this disease can be life-threatening (P Value=0.044), disruption of daily life or occupation following the pandemic (P Value=0.015, 0.003 respectively), ease of access to the vaccines (P Value<0.001), and the recommendations of health care providers (P Value=0.001) were factors that connected to the increased acceptance of vaccines. No demographic association was found with the acceptance of the vaccine. "Hesitancy about the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines" was the most common reason for refusal of immunization among unvaccinated people. Conclusion: This survey showed that the rate of acceptance of the vaccine among the population of Ardabil is satisfactory. To improve acceptance of the vaccines, health authorities must consider more useful strategies to expand accurate information and raise community awareness about COVID-19 and the effectiveness of available vaccines.
