Investigation of a ten-year trend of local transmission of Malaria (Plasmodium vivax) in endemic region of Ardabil province (Parsabad District) from 2001 to 2010

Background & Objective: Malaria is one of the serious diseases which threats people’s health in different parts of the world. In spite of success in the last 50 years in the northwest of Iran for controlling the disease, unfortunately since 1991 due to travelling of local people in the border cities of Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan, development of the disease has been reported in the Parsabad district. So, this study was conducted to show the role of proper planning in controlling of malaria. Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study based on the available data in Parsabad district health center. All the reported positive laboratory cases according to CDC protocol were collected from health houses, urban and rural health centers, hospitals and private sectors. Results and Conclusions: Total positive cases were 541, 323, 53, 10, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, and 1, respectively from 2001 to 2010. All the patients were Iranian, 70% of them were urban and 30% rural, 55% were female and 45% male. The peak of the seasonal transmission of the disease was observed in July and August. 85% of the positive cases were found in health network. In 88% of the suspicious cases, the blood smears were less than 48 hrs. 93% of the positive smears were in trophozoite and 7% in schizont blood stages. The number of the infected villages in the mentioned period was 5, 4, 4, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, and 0, respectively. Suggestions: Regarding to elimination of local transmission of the disease, support and intensification of the five-year operational plan of the Province Health Center, using of biocontrol agents, and constant monitoring are necessary for maintaining the present situation.
