Health related quality of life in mustard lung patients and its correlation with lung function parameters

Sulfur mustard as a potent toxic alkylating gas can cause severe pulmonary complications. Mustard lung is a specific form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that can cause serious impairments in chemically injured patients'(CIPs) quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between St George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) about health impairment and lung function parameters in CIPs. Methods and materials Fifty consecutively CIPs with stable COPD and mean age 46.3±9.18 SD years were enrolled in this study. All of subjects was visited by one physician and these parameters were evaluated in patients: history and physical examination, spirometry, 6 minute walk distance (6MWD), arterial blood gasometry, BODE index, MMRC scale. SGRQ was completed in all subjects. Results The majority of patients were in stages II and III (54% and 24% respectively). Mean FEV1 was 2.14 L ± 0.76 SD and mean total SGRQ score was 23.56 ± 31.14 SD. There were statistically significant correlations between total SGRQ and following parameters : GOLD stages (p=0.001), BODE index (P=0.001), and MMRC (p=0.001).Also statistically significant inverse correlations were found between total SGRQ score with FEV1 (p=0.015) and 6MWD (p=0.015). Conclusion The findings of this study revealed that CIPs have serious impairments in health related quality of life which have close associations with lung function parameters. It seems that especial attention to this problem is necessary.
